Praise! Praise can be tricky in parenting. As parents we want our children to succeed and accomplish great things but too much praise can hinder their mindset and make them not value the praise they receive. When we as parents praise the exceptional things they work hard at children tend to put more effort and place more value on the praise they receive. Joanna Pocock said, " Although most parents and educators agree that some praise, or, more precisely, “positive encouragement,” is critical to developing children’s self-esteem, the keys are to limit it, to keep it focused, and to be honest with it. If we applaud everything our children do simply because they have done it, then we are teaching them that mere existence is enough. This leads to entitlement and narcissism, not self-assurance and confidence." Anger! How do we overcome it when parenting our children. We love them and want what is best for them but how can we control ourselves in the heat of the moment. Several prophets taught us how we should be and control our anger over the span of many years. The following scripture was shared and it really stood out to me. I reads "Wherefore, I say unto you, that ye ought to forgive one another; for he that forgiveth not his brother his trespasses standeth condemned before the Lord; for there remaineth in him the greater sin. L the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men." (Doctrine and Covenants 64:9-10) This stood out to me because I had never specifically thought about forgiving my child. Sure maybe when they broke something of course, but sometimes when they struggle with a particular issue and make the same mistake several times how likely are we to forgive them seventy times...

I wanted my first post to be out the basis of parenting and that is relationships. The Arbinger Company put a model called the Parenting Pyramid that really helps parents to see where they are and what they need to work on when handling a child. Below is the Pyramid. The Arbinger Company summarizes the pyramid perfectly they said. 1. Although correction is a part of parenthood IT IS THE SMALLEST PART. 2. The key to effective correction is effectiveteaching. 3. The key to effective teaching is a good parent/child relationship. 4. The key to a good parent/child relationship is a good husband/wife relationship. 5. The key to a good husband/wife relationship is our personal way of being. Indeed, this quality affects every other aspect of the pyramid; that is why it is the deepest foundation.
